List of Common Questions

Q. I’m not very experienced and haven’t got a very good camera, does it matter?

A.  No, all you need to become a member is an interest in photography and, if you don’t think you’re very good, determination to improve.  As to the type of camera you own, that matters even less, the secret is to use that camera to the limit of its capabilities.  There are no bad cameras on the market, some are more basic than others, but if you are a beginner, it’s probably not a good idea to get a top of the range camera as you could become confused by the technicalities.  Also don’t forget sophisticated cameras cost sophisticated money and whilst paying the mortgage is boring it’s got to be done, so use whatever camera you own to the best of your and its abilities.

Q. Won't people laugh at my pictures or sneer at my camera?

A.  Not in this club they won’t.  Nobody was born knowing how to take good pictures, everyone has to learn, and also not everyone can afford the best equipment available.  As mentioned above, the secret is getting the best out of what you have, whilst hoping for a lottery win.

Q. I've been told that photo clubs are elitist and are only really interested in the best photographers?

A.  I’m afraid there’s a ring of truth in that for some clubs, but our club does most certainly does not fall into that category.  We are a friendly bunch and are interested in attracting anyone who’s keen on photography as a hobby, no matter what their level of expertise.

Q.  I’m not a beginner; in fact I’m a fairly experienced photographer why should I join?

A.  Mixing with people with similar interests and maybe passing on your expertise will be quite satisfying for most people.  Also from time to time we enter external competitions, which mean competing against some of the best photographers and this can be a real eye opener, so the opportunities to enter some high quality competitions or exhibitions are there.

Q. I’m a bit worried about coming to the club on my own the first few times?

A.  We are a friendly club, who don’t always take ourselves very seriously.  We make a point of making new members feel welcome and make sure that they have someone to talk to and sit with if they’re on their own.  We have several female members who will make sure that ladies are made to feel comfortable and relaxed.

Q.  I’m not sure where the club is and I’m worried about getting lost?

A.  If you phone or email ahead of coming to a meeting, one of us would be more than happy to meet you somewhere (in Gibraltar) and show you exactly where we are.

Success! Message received.
